Transitions Foundation has successfully graduated its second cohort of learners – the Class of 2017 – who have completed Grade 12 in style! Despite the many challenges that this group of learners has faced over the last 3 years (personally and socially), we are proud to see them each achieve a milestone that has become the first definition of success for many young people. While these learners have just completed arguably the most grueling 3 years of their schooling career, they are about to face a myriad of challenges as they navigate the world of tertiary education and work. It is these tough decision and transitions that we essentially help them through and hope that they enter the next phase of their lives informed and prepared.
As a result of their hard work and dedication, our Grade 12 Class of 2017 managed a 100% pass rate, with a collective minimum of 15 distinctions (exactly half of Allanridge’s distinctions), and an impressive 75% of Bachelors passes, which qualifies them for entry to degree studies. These results are considered excellent when viewed in the context of South Africa’s general performance on the National Senior Certificate. Overall, the country’s matrics achieved a 75% pass rate and only 28,7% Bachelor passes.
In our evaluation of our learners’ results throughout the programme, we have identified an upward trend in the performance of the majority of our Grade 12’sM, particularly in Maths and Science. Four (4) of our learners earned distinctions (>80%) in these subjects, thereby increasing their chances at accessing degree programmes in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) fields. Our two best achievers, with 4 distinctions each, will be studying towards Engineering degrees beginning in 2018.
Overall, these results clearly demonstrate the value of increased contact time (through tutoring), genuine interest in one’s progress (through mentorship), as well as inspiration drawn from exposure to new people and things (through master classes, skills sessions and field trips). This is a testament to the strength and impact of the work that Transitions Foundation undertakes, and to the support that our partners continue to grant our learners. We thank you!
